Titans-Dolphins

Dolphins 24, Titans 10

MIAMI (AP) - A workhorse once more, Ricky Williams wore down the Tennessee Titans until his final carry took him into the end zone, where he celebrated the touchdown that clinched the Miami Dolphins' latest win.

In his best performance since returning from a one-year retirement, Williams gained 172 yards in 26 rushes and helped Miami cap a perfect December by beating Tennessee 24-10 Saturday.

Williams has shared carries most of the season with Ronnie Brown. When knee and ankle injuries left the rookie inactive, Williams assumed his heaviest workload of the season.

``As the game goes on, I usually get stronger and more comfortable and have a better feel for what to do,'' the 2002 NFL rushing champion said. ``Life is about opportunities. Unfortunately Ronnie was down, so this week I made the most of the opportunity.''

The Dolphins (8-7), eliminated from playoff contention last week, have won five in a row for the first time since 1999. They went 4-0 in December under first-year coach Nick Saban, finishing the month unbeaten for the first time in 20 years.

``To watch this team grow and be part of it has been special,'' Williams said. ``We've made strides, and we can be confident that we can go into next season strong.''

The Titans (4-11) matched last season's loss total with one game still to go. They also lost quarterback Steve McNair, who strained a pectoral muscle in pregame warmups and came out in the second quarter.

``It got sore and more sore as the game went on,'' McNair said. ``It hurt more when I threw.''

Williams was dazed by a tackle in the fourth quarter, but quickly rejoined the lineup and looked even stronger and faster down the stretch. The 100-yard game was his first since 2003.

``I am so happy for Ricky,'' Saban said. ``He has played a great role for this team all year. He has been unselfish and has been a really good team guy.''

Nursing a 17-10 lead with less than 2 1/2 minutes left, Miami put the game in Williams' hands. He broke loose for a season-best 35-yard run and scored on a 19-yard run to clinch the win.

``We have a great deal of respect for Ricky,'' Titans coach Jeff Fisher said. ``But we never expected them to do that to our defense, especially when we were in some must-stop situations.''

Miami's Chris Chambers caught touchdown passes of 11 and 7 yards and surpassed 1,000 yards receiving in a season for the first time in his five-year career. He made five receptions for 51 yards and has scored in each of the past four games.

Tennessee's only touchdown came on a 55-yard pass from Billy Volek to Drew Bennett.

Otherwise, Volek struggled against a heavy pass rush, finishing 14-of-24 for 132 yards. He was sacked four times and lost his helmet as he threw an incompletion when hit by blitzing cornerback Reggie Howard.

McNair went 5-for-13 for 34 yards, and his final two throws were intercepted. Volek lost a fumble on a sack after the Titans reached the Miami 3-yard line on the first series of the second half.

``The only positive,'' Fisher said, ``is that it's over.''

Despite the Dolphins' fast finish, their bandwagon has yet to overflow. Announced attendance was a sellout of 72,001, but the stands were half empty for the Christmas Eve game.

Tank Williams recovered Gus Frerotte's fumble to give Tennessee a first down at the Miami 10, but the Titans settled for a 24-yard field goal by Rob Bironas and their only lead at 3-0.

Miami took advantage of a turnover to pull even. When the Titans' Ben Troupe attempted a one-handed catch, the ball deflected to linebacker Donnie Spragan, setting up Olindo Mare's 25-yard field goal.

McNair's next pass was also intercepted, by Sam Madison, and Miami then mounted a 61-yard drive capped by Chambers' 11-yard touchdown reception.

Following a punt, the Dolphins moved 48 yards in the final 1:43 of the half for another score. Chambers' second TD made it 17-3 at halftime.

Frerotte, a 12-year pro, tied his career high of 17 touchdown passes. He finished 14-for-30 for 151 yards.

Notes: McNair said he's uncertain whether he'll be able to play in the final game Jan. 1 at Jacksonville. ... Dangerous Titans rookie Adam ``Pacman'' Jones was limited to 25 yards in eight punt returns. ... Williams' 100-yard game was the 30th of his career. ... The Dolphins rushed for 192 yards, their highest total since 2002.

Seahawks 28, Titans 24

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Seattle Seahawks don't want to worry about what any other team in the NFL is doing.

With each victory, they are closer to making that reality.

Matt Hasselbeck threw three touchdown passes, including a 2-yarder to Darrell Jackson in the fourth quarter, and the Seahawks rallied for a 28-24 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday that clinched a first-round bye for the NFC West champions.

Seattle (12-2) won its 10th straight for the first time in team history and also matched the 1984 squad for most victories in a season.

The Seahawks had a chance to wrap up home-field advantage in the playoffs - another club first - on Sunday night, but NFC North-leading Chicago beat Atlanta in the late game to improve to 10-4.

``Our goal right now is to get the first-round bye,'' Hasselbeck said. ``We got it. Our next goal is to play at home. If Chicago takes care of business, great. If they don't, that's fine too. ... Instead of rooting for teams, it's been nice not to have to worry about teams.''

The Seahawks planned to watch the Atlanta-Chicago game via satellite on their flight home to Seattle on a jet from chairman Paul Allen. Coach Mike Holmgren planned to enjoy this victory before worrying about Saturday's game with Indianapolis.

``This might be the only time I ever root for the Falcons,'' Holmgren said.

Hasselbeck finished with 285 yards as the Seahawks beat the Titans (4-10) for the fifth straight time in their first meeting since 1998.

Shaun Alexander also ran for a touchdown, giving him an NFL-best 24, and the league's best rusher coming into the weekend became only the fifth player in NFL history to rush for 1,600 yards in consecutive seasons. He finished with 26 carries for 172 yards.

``It's great to know I'm going to be in the second round of the playoffs,'' Alexander said. ``This is a new door for us, but it's something we've been preparing for for a long time, so we're really excited.''

The Titans weren't happy with coming up close. They have lost five games by eight points or less this season.

``I'm not going to sit here and say we're four points behind a team that's got the best record in the NFC,'' Titans coach Jeff Fisher said. ``I can tell you this. I'm proud of the fight and proud of everything I got out of our football team.''

The Seahawks had to work a little harder in this game after blowing out Philadelphia and San Francisco the previous two weeks.

Steve McNair, playing perhaps his final game in The Coliseum with a $50 million bonus due in the offseason, chewed up one of the NFL's better defenses by attacking a secondary missing three defensive backs to injury.

He led the Titans to 24 straight points and a 24-14 lead midway through the third quarter. He threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns, and Jarrett Payton also ran for a TD.

The Titans had a chance to pad their lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter, after keeping the drive alive with a fake punt for a 26-yard completion. Facing fourth-and-1 at the Seattle 6, Chris Brown tried to run right and was stopped for a 1-yard loss.

Hasselbeck responded with a 13-play, 93-yard drive that ended when Jackson scored the go-ahead touchdown with 8:59 to go. Jackson was playing and starting for the first time since Seattle started this winning streak on Oct. 2 after missing time with a knee injury.

That left the Titans plenty of time, but McNair threw incomplete on a pass on fourth-and-2 at the Seattle 34.

``Teams like us, who haven't had as many wins, we kind of stumble a little bit to try to make some plays instead of keeping our composure as well,'' Titans tight end Ben Troupe said.

Seattle started the game where it left off after winning by a combined score of 83-3 in the previous two games. The Seahawks outgained Tennessee 195-24 on offense with Alexander rushing for 87 yards on his first eight carries.

Then Tennessee's Antwan Odom sliced through the line and blocked a 36-yard field goal attempt by Josh Brown early in the second. McNair moved the Titans on three straight drives of at least 78 yards that gave them a 21-14 lead early in the third.

Notes: Hasselbeck hasn't been intercepted in six road games this season, a stretch of 177 passing attempts. ... Jackson finished with six catches for 72 yards. ... McNair's second TD pass put him over 3,000 yards passing for the fifth time in his career and fourth in the past five seasons. The quarterback also wished his wife, Mechelle, a happy birthday on the Jumbotron.

Texans-Titans

Titans 13, Texans 10

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Houston Texans aren't sure how many more ways they can find to lose games at the end. The Tennessee Titans know enough not to be picky.

Kris Brown hooked a 31-yard field goal short and wide left on an untimed play with no time left even as Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher was trying to call a timeout, and the Titans held on for a 13-10 victory Sunday over the hapless Texans.

Brown also had a 37-yard field goal attempt blocked by Tank Williams with 3:48 left.

Rob Bironas kicked a 21-yard field goal with 10 seconds left that gave Tennessee (4-9) the sweep of its AFC South rival, the Titans' third sweep in the four seasons since the Texans replaced them in Houston.

Tennessee tried to keep the ball out of Jerome Mathis' hands by squibbing the kickoff, but Todd Washington pitched it to the rookie returner. Mathis took off, and only Reynaldo Hill grabbing him by the face mask on the right sideline kept him from scoring. The penalty put the ball at the Tennessee 13 - except the kicker jerked the ball left.

Fisher was grateful the officials didn't see him asking for the timeout.

``I don't know if I have another way to describe that other than that was ugly,'' Fisher said.

The Texans (1-12) lost their sixth straight in yet another game they had plenty of chances to win, especially at the end. After blowing a 24-3 lead against St. Louis and a late lead last week against Baltimore, Houston had not one, but two chances in this game - the blocked kick and then the final one.

``In 20 years, I have never been through three weeks like we have been through here,'' Houston coach Dom Capers said.

Steve McNair set up Bironas' first career game-winning field goal by driving the Titans 70 yards in 10 plays with his second-longest run this season, an 18-yarder on third-and-4.

Brown said he had hoped Mathis would give him another chance after being low on his blocked kick, and he had been warming up on the sideline

``I didn't pull my end of the bargain today,'' Brown said.

Rookie Adam ``Pacman'' Jones also scored the first touchdown of his NFL career on a 52-yard punt return after rejoining the Titans late Saturday night following a funeral for a close friend and the death of an aunt.

The Titans also sacked David Carr six times, including two by Kyle Vanden Bosch for a career-high 12 1/2 sacks this season. They held the Texans to 234 yards offense, and Vanden Bosch called the ending crazy.

``I thought we won, then I thought they brought it back. Then I thought the game was over, then I thought we were going to overtime. Then we ended up winning. It was crazy,'' Vanden Bosch said.

The emotions were very different for the Texans.

``Why can't we just find a way to make one more play?'' Carr asked. ``It's offense, defense, special teams, myself included. We all have to find a way to make one more play, and we won't be in that situation.''

The Titans had to overcome their own ineptness in a sloppy game that featured a 21-yard punt by the Texans and a kickoff that would have gone out of bounds if not touched by Jarrett Payton at the Tennessee 15.

Tennessee turned the ball over on downs three times, missed a field goal wide right in the first quarter and had passes dropped in the end zone on two possessions.

The Titans were lucky all tickets for this game were sold in July because the stadium was half full on a cold, windy day.

Domanick Davis ran for 139 yards and caught seven passes for 50 more, and he gave the Texans a 10-3 lead with a 3-yard reception just before halftime.

Capers certainly tried to give his Texans every chance to win. He had Brown fake a field goal attempt in the fourth quarter on fourth-and-5, and the kicker ran for the first down only to see his field goal attempt blocked four plays later.

The Texans had been protecting Carr a little better since matching their season-high by allowing seven sacks to Tennessee on Oct. 9. Not this Sunday as the Titans sacked Carr once on each of the Texans' first three possessions.

The Titans couldn't take advantage with two receivers and a tight end missing the game with injuries, bogging down every time they got near the end zone. They finally scored on a Bironas field goal with 4:28 left in the second.

Notes: McNair finally passed John Elway for fourth among NFL quarterbacks in yards rushing with his 18-yard run. ... Jones' return for a TD was the Titans' first since Justin McCareins returned a punt 58 yards for a touchdown at Atlanta on Nov. 23, 2003. ... Titans running back Travis Henry had a 42-yard reception in the second quarter that was his career-long. ... Brown, who was a perfect 5-of-5 for field goals last week, was 1-of-3 against the Titans.

Titans-Colts
Colts 35, Titans 3

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indianapolis Colts are making perfection look easier every week.

Now they'll have a chance to keep their historic quest going in the playoffs, too.

With the Triplets in sync and the defense producing another physically dominant performance Sunday, Tennessee never had a chance as the Colts rolled to a 35-3 victory to clinch a playoff spot and remain the NFL's only unbeaten team.

``Anything that comes along with winning, you accept it,'' two-time MVP Peyton Manning said.

The Colts are the fifth team in league history to go 12-0, but must wait until next week at Jacksonville for a chance to wrap up their third straight AFC South title and first-round bye in the playoffs.

If the past few games are any indication, that's only a matter of time.

Indianapolis has won seven of its last nine by at least 17 points, averaging more than 35 points. The Colts even routed Tennessee on a day Manning threw only 17 passes, the second-fewest of his NFL career. He threw two passes in last year's season finale at Denver.

But the latest victory epitomized how Indy continues to win - by overcoming anything opponents try.

On Sunday, the Titans (3-9) wanted to play keep-away. It didn't work.

Bet on NFL At WagerWeb SportsBook

Manning completed 13 of 17 passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns, giving him a near-perfect passer-rating of 151.2 and extending his NFL record to eight straight seasons with at least 25 TD passes.

Edgerrin James carried 28 times for 107 yards, becoming the third-fastest player in league history to top 9,000 yards. In 93 games, James has rushed for 9,067 yards. Eric Dickerson did it in 82 games; Jim Brown did it in 88.

Marvin Harrison caught four passes for 61 yards and his first reception, a 36-yarder on the Colts' opening drive, made Harrison the 12th player in league history to top 12,000 yards receiving. His 10-yard TD catch on the Colts' opening possession was the 92nd between Manning and Harrison, also extending that duo's NFL record.

If anyone thought Indy would have a letdown after an emotional victory Monday night against Pittsburgh, the Colts' answer was resounding: Not a chance.

They limited the Titans to 40 yards rushing, sacked Steve McNair twice and Billy Volek twice and even knocked McNair out for four plays in the third quarter with a bruised right shin.

``I'm very proud of this team, coming back after Monday night and playing like that, a complete game,'' coach Tony Dungy said. ``We had that focus, we wanted to get in the playoffs.''

Now the focus turns to other things such as what the Colts hope will be a run toward history. No team has gone undefeated since the 1972 Miami Dolphins.

And each week, it seems, the Colts are converting skeptics into believers.

``If they continue to stay healthy, with what they do on offense and with the speed they have on defense, they're going to have a chance,'' Titans coach Jeff Fisher said after losing his sixth straight against the Colts.

The young Titans did little right.

A botched trick play to Adam ``Pacman'' Jones knocked the Titans out of field goal range and set up the Colts second score. Fisher gambled by going on fourth down routinely, failing four of five times, and in the waning moments when the Titans were trying to salvage a score, the Colts stopped them at the goal line.

It was that kind of day.

McNair was 22-of-33 for 220 yards, and fumbled when Dwight Freeney sacked him in the fourth quarter. Larry Tripplett grabbed the ball out of the air and went 60 yards for a touchdown.

``If we had played the perfect game, we could have won,'' said McNair, the NFL's former co-MVP.

But the Colts wouldn't allow it.

Manning connected with Harrison on the Colts' first series for a 7-0 lead, then took advantage of good field position after Rob Bironas pushed a 51-yard field goal wide right. Eventually, Manning hooked up with Bryan Fletcher on a 13-yard TD pass to make it 14-0.

Tennessee's only score came on Bironas' 24-yard field goal with 29 seconds left in the half.

Manning opened the third quarter with a 27-yard TD pass to Reggie Wayne, and James' 2-yard TD run with 1:28 left in the third assured the Colts of one more week of perfection.

``I know how hard it is to win nine games, 10 games, 11 games,'' Manning said. ``To win 12 games is extremely hard, but to win 12 in a row ... You don't have time to pat yourself on the back as a team.''

Notes: Dungy won his 100th regular-season game Sunday. ... The Colts extended their franchise record home winning streak to 11 and have now won 20 of their last 21 regular-season games. ... Kyle Vanden Bosch, who came into the game second in the NFL in sacks, had two wiped out by Tennessee penalties.
